The Miracle of the Weeping Irish Madonna
The above painting of the Blessed Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus, originated in the Diocese of Clonfert. In 1650 – during the Cromwellian War – the Bishops of Ireland gathered before this image to solemnly proclaim Our Lady as Queen and Patroness of Ireland. One year later, Bishop Walter Lynch was exiled and took the painting with him for safe keeping. He found refuge in the city of Györ where he was later appointed auxillary bishop. He died in 1663 before he could return to Ireland, leaving the painting in the care of the Cathedral of Györ.
On St Patrick's Day in 1697, during a time of great suffering in Ireland, the painting began to weep blood from the eyes and face of Our Lady. The painting was thoroughly inspected to rule out any deception, but continued to weep. This great miraculous event lasted three hours and was witnessed by hundreds of people at the Cathedral.
Prayer to Our Lady Queen of Ireland

O Immaculate Mary, dear Mother, Consoler of the Afflicted,
I take refuge in your most lovable Heart with all the trust of which I am capable. You shall be the dearest object of my love and my veneration. From you, the dispenser of heavenly treasures,
I shall always seek peace in my troubles, light in my doubts, defense in my dangers, help in my needs.
Be therefore, my refuge, my strength, my consolation. O Mary Consoler of the Afflicted hear my prayer and answer it.
O' Holy Mother, Consoler of the Afflicted, pray for us who experience hardship and danger; console us with your presence now and every day. Amen.
(Prayer of St Therese of Liseaux
to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted)
